Explaining our choices for set, cast and costume

All the choices that we have made have been influenced by conventions and audiences expectations of our genre. Our genre is rock/pop so going off our previous research into genres, we made choices about the way we will design our campaign and present the band.

Set

Concept

The choices that we have made for the set reflect the way we want the audience to see them. We have set the video initially in a run down basement. This makes the band more relatable to our audience as they may be inspired by how the band are becoming something out of nothing and that maybe the audience could do it too as the band do not have any high-end equipment and are just doing this from home in their basement. We then show them working their way up to becoming bigger. Showing the work in the studio at first, which is showing the band members in a recording studio, this is showing the hard work they are putting into their band and how determined they are to make it. Showing the audience almost a 'behind the scenes' of how the band are working their way up and may be inspiring from the amount of work they are putting in, to when they work up to the second studio set with dramatic lighting, indicating they have 'made it'.

Design

The art design of the set is just as important as the concept of it as well. We have designed it to look very grungy, messy and run down. This reflects the age of our band, as teenagers and rock band members are generally seen to be messy and rebellious, therefore they do not follow the expectations of society. We are making it look like it is their own space just for the band, so they have decorated it with posters and records, the bands of these will reflect the genre of music that we are looking at. These band posters will help attract audience as if they see a poster of a band they like they may think that because the band like it then they will like the bands music as well.

Costume

The costume that our band are wearing in the first set is very casual, we have made this decision as we want the music video to look like they are filming it themselves and not professional, therefore they would not have been styled by directors and just in the clothes they would wear normally. Their outfits will reflect the time period that it is set in. This is the 90s, so we did some research into casual 90s outfits and decided we want the cast to wear baggy clothes which show this.
In the second set, we want the cast to look like they have made it more, therefore they need to look a lot more together and like they have been styled a lot more. Therefore having them all wearing plain black
will look a lot more like they have been styled to look the same.

Casting

The cast that we have chosen reflect the conventions of rock as they are all teenagers, and although traditionally rock bands are all boys, we have chosen to cast a girl. We chose her as she fits in very well with the rest of our cast members and interacts with them very well, she is also very good at guitar and was keen to be involved. Her persona fits the concept very well as she is capable of acting very masculine and like the rock genre.
