The advanced editing workshop went into detail about how to edit music videos and develop skills on sound and visual syncing.
In music videos it is very important to sync the footage very accurately and therefore we use a clapperboard so that when editing the footage it makes it a lot easier to get the lip syncing exactly to the right time of the song. We do this by matching the numbers on the clapperboard to the time of the song.A sound sync is when you listen to the sound on the footage and the music being played on set and sync this to the soundtrack. A picture sync is looking at the lip syncing and the movement of the cast/playing of instruments to the soundtrack.
It is very important to rename shots so it is easy to find them, for example 'Singer, close up' and 'Singer Mid shot'. This makes it easy when reading it to know what the shot is and will make it a lot easier to organise. There are different parts to editing, which are done in a specific order. This is in order of the main focus of the video and how important the aspects of editing are. The most important is the performance cut, therefore this is done fist, this is cuts of the band playing their instruments, which is the main part of the music video. The next part is the narrative cut, which is the non-sync part of the video which fills gaps. This makes the video more interesting and gives it more of a story. You then need to clean the edit, which makes it look a lot more neat and making sure everything is synced up. Then nextt is the effects and colouring, which is to touch up the visual aesthetics of the video.
When editing the performance cuts there are a few rules to follow:- Cut to the beat of the music
- The lead singers face has to be shown for the first line of the song.
- Shots should be grouped together to make the video less confusing and show them who is who
- You should follow the movement of the cast and cut according to their movement, for example if they look to another band member, cut to them and follow this movement.
There are also main rules to follow when editing which are:
- Do not rough cut
- Focus on 10 seconds of footage at a time, edit this then move onto the next 10 seconds
- Edit for an hour at a time
- Don't show people until it is finished
