Feedback from full treatment pitch

We presented our full and visual treatment pitch to our class, and were given feedback from our production coordinator and our teacher. This was to help us understand what other peoples perspective on our idea.

They said that overall it is a good idea, however there are too many elements and a bit too much going on. We only need three elements that should be:

  • Band performing w camera in hand = set up 1
  • Band doing things around the garage = set up 2
  • Shots in other set w tvs = set up 3

Luke said that he really liked the set up in the garage and that it was a good idea to go ahead with. He said that we should have a wide shot covering the performance element, so that we can cut back and forth between the VCR handheld shots and a wide shot of the whole band.
For the VCR set up two, with the band doing things around the garage - we need to have a very precise list so we and the actors know exactly what they are doing.
We need to change the current list we have as it doesn't match the genre at the moment. The things that we should have should make the band members look 'cool', an example Luke gave was having them playing retro computer games. These things need to not be tied in with the song or the lyrics at all and need to show elements of the 90s.

Instead of thinking of the three elements as certain parts in one video we should think of them as three separate videos, then when we edit we will weave between the three parts.
He said that we will need to think very carefully about who we cast as the lead singer as the video will heavily depend on this.

Targets:
These are four things that me and my group need to work on:
- Make a list of the specific things that the band members will be doing in set up 2.
- Think about only having three elements and what we need to get rid of as there is too much currently
- Think carefully about who to cast as our lead singer
- Reconsider the lighting in the basement, as natural lighting may not create the right mood

Early feedback on song choice

After presenting two of my songs to the class, I was given feedback on things such as the conventions that they would expect to see and the genre they think the song is.

The reason we did this is so that we can understand other peoples opinions on whether the song choices are suitable for a music video, and to understand if we would be able to clearly market the artist/band as a new artist.

The two songs I presented were, The Bluest You by Kidsmoke and After Midnight (1AM) by Lola Young.

1. The Bluest You - Kidsmoke

· Is it clear if they were a band or artist? - Yes, they were clearly a band, this can be heard through the instuments used, and the type of music.

· Was the genre of music clear and what conventions would be expected by the audience - The genre was very clearly indie, with no subgenres, which is good as it is a pure and clear genre. The conventions expected would be lots of colours and very energetic movements, the actors would be dressed very uniquely with some obsurities. There would be some unexpected and weird scenes, for example the band dressed as pandas while dancing.

· Is this a good song choice for a low budget first time music video and filmable? - Yes, there are many different possiblilities of scenes and shots that could be used. It would not be that limited as to what we can and can't do.

· Is the song easy to cast and are they any things you will need to consider for the cast e.g., age, ethnicity, talent playing an instrument etc? - Yes, we could use A1 boys to form the band.

· Based off the genre and tone of the song what was the image people pictured for the band/artist? - Very energetic, obsucre, quirky, happy and engaging with audience.

2. After Midnight (1AM) - Lola Young

· Is it clear if they were a band or artist? - Yes, an artist, can tell by the fact it was just her voice with a piano in the background.

· Was the genre of music clear and what conventions would be expected by the audience - It was quite clear, people thought it was either R&B/soul or pop, but we decided on R&B

· Is this a good song choice for a low budget first time music video and filmable? - Yes, however it would be harder to find things to film as it is a very slow and emotional song, with all the focus on the one girl.

· Is the song easy to cast and are they any things you will need to consider for the cast e.g., age, ethnicity, talent playing an instrument etc? - We would be able to use an A1 or A2 girl, however we will need to check Lola's ethnicity in order to make sure we are not whitewashing the song.

· Based off the genre and tone of the song what was the image people pictured for the band/artist? - Very emotional, glamorous (dressed in elegant dresses ect), lust, focus all on the girl.
